Winter Landscape Tips (2005-2006)
- It’s too late to preventatively treat for winter weeds in your lawns and flower beds, but now is the time (early to mid January)to treat for your spring/summer weeds. I like to use a fertilizer combination with Barricade for lawns. There are many choices to use and where to purchase. Read the label!

- If you haven’t mulched yet, go ahead and do so with pine bark mulch. I don’t like using hardwood mulches because they can actually pull Nitrogen from your soil which is the main nutrient your plants depend on. Pine bark is also acidic and all our soils in Houston need to have a PH of about 6.0-6.5 for most plants to do well.

- It’s time to think about fire ant prevention for the coming season. March is the best time for a broadcast treatment of your beds and lawns. Go ahead and treat individual mounds as you see them. Remember never kick a mound to see if there is activity. Doing that will only cause the mound to likely split up and create new ones.

- Also January-February is a good time to use a granular insecticide to perimeter treat your entire house for roaches, spiders, etc. As soon as Spring flushes, so will the critters.

- Remember the 3 P’s - plants, pipes and pets when a good freeze warning is on us. You could be sorry if you don’t.
