| What’s wrong with my tree? (May/June 2005) |
There are many things to factor that can
cause a tree to decline and then die. Usually we notice the tree is already
dead. How do you determine what is wrong with your trees? Was it over
watering, not enough water, a virus, bacteria, or fungus?
The first thing to do is call a expert such as a certified arborist. These
people can offer sound advice over the phone or they may have to come
out to the site of the affected tree for a general assessment. This usually
involves a visible assessment of the tree - does the bark have cracks
or weeping holes, leaves discolored, insect damage, etc.? - and you need
to provide any information relating to newly installed irrigation, construction
activity, how long was the tree in decline.
Sometimes soil samples are needed to determine soil fertility. Soils could
be low in nitrogen and in need of a deep root fertilization program. Also
tissue sampling can be done to determine root diseases and or fungal problems.
The main goal is go to the experts and be preventive in the health of
your trees.
