When the structural roots of trees are
planted too deep or are covered with too much soil the lack of oxygen
can kill the roots and lead to the decline or death of the tree. Also
in some species of trees the prolonged moisture at the base of the trunk
can increase root and collar rot diseases. The following is some basic
guidelines when planting and placing soil around trees.
1. As a general rule the uppermost roots should be within the 1 to 3 inches
of the soil surface, measured 3 to 4 inches from the trunk, but sometimes
there may be exceptions.
2. Plant trees at the proper depth by having the root flare exposed or
visible.
3. Trees planted with too much soil over the structural roots may require
replanting.
