Spring is not the only time to plant for color. Here are a few choices
for winter. Pansies are the first thought and best bet. Pansies come
in many colors and cultivars to choose from. Pansies will survive our
winters and are probably the hardiest choice. Give them good drainage,
fertilize and you should be pleased with the results.
Cylcamen are a popular choice if your budget allows. These require good
drainage and a fungicide drench to keep them healthy. The results are
worth it.
Dianthus, Lobelia, Ornamental Kale and Cabbage, Swiss Chard, Ornamental
Millet, Allysum, Calendula or Snapdragons are other plants to consider
in making up winter planters or flower beds. Pansies, Allysum and Lobelia
should be used as shorter plants. Dianthus, Kale, Cabbage and Cyclamen
should be used as midsize plants. Millet, Swiss Chard, Snapdragons and
Calendulas should be used as taller background flowers when mixing varieties
together.
