New Tree Planting
This time of the season is the ideal time to plant trees
and shrubs. The weather conditions are cooler and with proper
watering the plant roots can get established before the
heavy spring rains and hot summers come. Remember to locate
all underground utilities before digging.
Most trees come as balled and burlaped, or bare rooted.
As a result of the digging process the trees root system
has been reduced so be aware of transplant shock. Transplant
shock is indicated by slow growth and poor vigor following
transplanting. With proper site preparation and good follow
up care your new trees and shrubs should get established
quickly in their new location.
Here are 8 simple steps
to follow for planting trees and shrubs.
1. Dig a shallow but broad planting hole
2. Identify the root flare
3. Place the plant at the proper height
4 Straighten the plant in the hole
5. Fill hole gently but firmly
6. Stake plant if necessary
7. Mulch base of the plant
8. Provide follow up care
Tree Selection
When selecting trees or shrubs you need to ask some basic
questions. There are a lot of factors that can determine
what you can and can not do. Think about the following questions.
Why is the tree being planted?
What is the size and location of the planting site?
What type of soil conditions are there?
What type of maintenance is going to be needed?
Asking a tree care professional these questions and others
prior to planting can help you determine the right tree
or shrub for the right place. Other things to consider before
planting can be exposure to the sun, form and size, space
constraints, drainage, activity of the area, and hardiness.
Properly placed and cared for trees and shrubs increase
the value of your property and help the environment.
